Mohammad Shafiqul Islam's new collection of poetry has the uniqueness of presenting small vignettes of life, from darkness to moments of unrequited love and a wonder towards natural splendor. The images may be fleeting, but are stark, dynamic and make the readerspause at the poet's richness of language. In his 'Dustbin', the everyday banal item brings forth associations of memory and ends with the shocking vision of a destitute mother leaving the child behind, with passers-by failing to note the muck heap of civilization. Another poem about autumn almost becomes a reminder of Shelley in its evocative language and the melancholic notion of crestfallen leaves, juxtaposes with an 'ambracing of fall'. Islam's vivid use of imagery and metaphor in this collection presents and metaphor in this collection presents and inquiry of human life in its minutia and reminds reader of the power of poetry that sholdom comes by.
