Ruddro Muhammad Shahidullah is one of the few poets of
twentieth century Bangladesh who managed to make Bengali poetry popular among
the readers. Though noted for his romantic and revolutionary poetry, he also
penned short story, play and songs. Ruddro's poetry portrays the frustration
resulted from the shattered dreams and aspirations of Bengali nation which
achieved independence through a blood shedding war with the cost of millions of
lives in 1971. Born in 1956, Ruddro Muhammad Shahidullah witnessed the struggle
of the nation for independence as an adolescent and subsequently experienced
the desultory and despairing milieu of independent Bangladesh as well. Ruddro
is one of the rarest poets of Bangladesh who had much more to give. He died
young at the age of only 34! His voice stands unique and conspicuous in the
tradition of Bengali poetry.
This book contains the representative poems of Ruddro
Muhammad Shahidullah in admirable translation by Nadira Bhabna.
